Conducting research for a street or prison gang can be time consuming and frustrating. This in part, may be due to a lack of information or a lack of accurate information.

Gang dynamics frequently change. Throughout their history, some gangs have made many changes to include their gang name, gang colors, membership requirements and even their alliances with other gangs.

"Into the Abyss" - A Personal Journey Into Gangs
Along with Gangs OR US, a complete source for gang identification research on the Internet

"Into the Abyss" is unique in that it is a complete online gang identification book that is available on the Internet. Unlike all other gang identification web sites, including Gangs OR Us, which has much of the same information in a different format, "Into the Abyss" offers in book form, twenty-five chapters with almost 1,000 pages and over 2,200 external Internet links. The book is formatted to include a comprehensive glossary, a guide to street drugs, resources for teachers, a comprehensive listing of funding for gang related research, links to gang legislation and much more.

"Into the Abyss" was authored by Southwest Missouri State University Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice, Michael Carlie, PhD.  Dr. Carlie spent three years traveling the United States, as well as other parts of the world, gathering his research material from law enforcement and corrections personnel, educators, gang members, anyone who was involved with, or dealt with, street gangs.
